Comment of the Day: Don't Like "Porn Conventions?" Then Don't Attend Them!
Today's comment comes in response to a story out of Fairview Heights where local politicians are outraged over a BDSM convention -- "Beat Me in St. Louis" -- held recently at the city-owned convention center.
The political grandstanding over the conference prompted reader "anonymous" to respond:
To me, this falls under the category....if you don't like it...don't go. The same as people that complain about tv shows, and cussing on the radio. If you don't like it. Don't listen, don't watch. Mind your own business people. Quit trying to dictate to others your views.

BDSM presentation’s student organizer explains her motives
I'm not completely sure how I found out about the talk Master R and Mistress Collette were having down at SUNY Albany, but I assume it was from FetLife. I heard about it in late October and instantly wanted to find a way to bring something unique like this to campus. I talked to Casey Nelson about it, and he was a bit skeptical at first. So to put everyone's minds at rest about the nature of the talk, I took a trip down to Albany in November to attend the talk they were giving for a Psychology of Sex class.
The class was a lecture hall bigger than Kellas 106, and I was standing in the back because there was no room. The talk was amazing. The stories they told were horrific and enthralling at the same time. They were always professional about it, they weren't describing things pornographically. The talk was only supposed to last an hour, and went for almost two!
Afterward, there was a volunteer-based flogging demonstration, and of course I waited in line for my turn to experience Mistress Collette's handiwork and skill with the flogger. It was very sensual and painless. After that, a bunch of us got together and had our own munch [meet and greet at a restaurant]. There were about a dozen of us, and we all talked about our experiences with FetLife, our favorite fetishes, how we got into the scene. Master R and Mistress Collette attended with us, and we all had a great time.
I knew I wanted to bring such a wonderful experience to campus. BDSM has such a negative stigma attached to it, and I wanted to help open up people's minds to the truth about it, and get rid of the misconceptions of BDSM. I had to go to the SGA and ask them to sponsor the talk, which mostly they were all willing to do, then I had to make sure the Deans were ok with something as controversial as this coming to speak on campus. Then I went about creating flyers and hanging them up on campus, and somehow they all have been taken down. Oh well. And now I'm just trying to get as much out there by word of mouth. Find the people who want to attend the talk and then find the seriously interested people to attend our own little munch afterward.
Feel free to use my real name. I'm not ashamed of being in the lifestyle or sharing who I really am, and I think it's so sad that most people actually have to because of work or social status.

An anonymous flier was distributed in Fairview, Ill., notifying residents that Mayor Gail Mitchell had "allowed" a group of bondage enthusiasts to hold “Beat Me in St. Louis” in the Fountains at Fairview and the adjoining Four Points by Sheraton hotel. The flier's author called the conference a “porn convention on city-owned property,” and claimed Mitchell did what he could to keep it a secret.
Mitchell says he couldn't have stopped the conference if he wanted to. But he absolutely wanted to.
“You bet I would have stopped it if I could have, because I don't want that kind of stuff going on in my city,” Mitchell said. Lawmakers say the conference will be the first item on the agenda at their committee meeting. And Mitchell had the police department and city attorney look into the matter.
“We host a lot of different organizations,” Christine Orr, general manager of the hotel and conference center, said. “This was a private organization. They rented out the hotel and conference center. We had no problems whatsoever with the group.”
And there's the rub. It was a private party. No one in Fairview was the wiser until the flier circulated. And even if they had been, what difference would it make? It was a gathering of consenting adults doing things consenting adults like to do. Who cares? Really?
