Comment of the Day: Don't Like "Porn Conventions?" Then Don't Attend Them!
Today's comment comes in response to a story out of Fairview Heights where local politicians are outraged over a BDSM convention -- "Beat Me in St. Louis" -- held recently at the city-owned convention center.
The political grandstanding over the conference prompted reader "anonymous" to respond:
To me, this falls under the category....if you don't like it...don't go. The same as people that complain about tv shows, and cussing on the radio. If you don't like it. Don't listen, don't watch. Mind your own business people. Quit trying to dictate to others your views.

BDSM presentation’s student organizer explains her motives
I'm not completely sure how I found out about the talk Master R and Mistress Collette were having down at SUNY Albany, but I assume it was from FetLife. I heard about it in late October and instantly wanted to find a way to bring something unique like this to campus. I talked to Casey Nelson about it, and he was a bit skeptical at first. So to put everyone's minds at rest about the nature of the talk, I took a trip down to Albany in November to attend the talk they were giving for a Psychology of Sex class.
The class was a lecture hall bigger than Kellas 106, and I was standing in the back because there was no room. The talk was amazing. The stories they told were horrific and enthralling at the same time. They were always professional about it, they weren't describing things pornographically. The talk was only supposed to last an hour, and went for almost two!
Afterward, there was a volunteer-based flogging demonstration, and of course I waited in line for my turn to experience Mistress Collette's handiwork and skill with the flogger. It was very sensual and painless. After that, a bunch of us got together and had our own munch [meet and greet at a restaurant]. There were about a dozen of us, and we all talked about our experiences with FetLife, our favorite fetishes, how we got into the scene. I knew I wanted to bring such a wonderful experience to campus. I had to go to the SGA and ask them to sponsor the talk, which mostly they were all willing to do, then I had to make sure the Deans were ok with something as controversial as this coming to speak on campus. Then I went about creating flyers and hanging them up on campus, and somehow they all have been taken down. Oh well. And now I'm just trying to get as much out there by word of mouth. Find the people who want to attend the talk and then find the seriously interested people to attend our own little munch afterward.

An anonymous flier was distributed in Fairview, Ill., notifying residents that Mayor Gail Mitchell had "allowed" a group of bondage enthusiasts to hold “Beat Me in St. Louis” in the Fountains at Fairview and the adjoining Four Points by Sheraton hotel. The flier's author called the conference a “porn convention on city-owned property,” and claimed Mitchell did what he could to keep it a secret.
Mitchell says he couldn't have stopped the conference if he wanted to. But he absolutely wanted to.
“You bet I would have stopped it if I could have, because I don't want that kind of stuff going on in my city,” Mitchell said. Lawmakers say the conference will be the first item on the agenda at their committee meeting. And Mitchell had the police department and city attorney look into the matter.
“We host a lot of different organizations,” Christine Orr, general manager of the hotel and conference center, said. “This was a private organization. They rented out the hotel and conference center. We had no problems whatsoever with the group.”
And there's the rub. It was a private party. No one in Fairview was the wiser until the flier circulated. And even if they had been, what difference would it make? It was a gathering of consenting adults doing things consenting adults like to do. Who cares? Really?

Derrick Pierce Directs BDSM Movie, Opens MMA Gym
LOS ANGELES — Derrick Pierce on Thursday began principal photography on his directorial debut for Adam & Eve Pictures, "Pretty Tied Up."
The veteran performer also recently opened Titan Training Center, his own mixed-martial-arts gym in Reseda, Calif.
Pierce's new movie will feature five BDSM-themed scenes starring several performers who excel in the genre. The hand-picked cast includes Isis Love, Lily LaBeau, Trina Michaels, Bridgette B., Kortney Kane and Skylar Price, along with James Deen, Mr. Pete, Christian XXX and Sascha.
"I want to push the limits," said Pierce, who is in his sixth year in adult and has become well established in BDSM circles in addition to his feature and gonzo work.
“We are very excited about Derrick’s involvement with the project,” said Meredith Christopher, executive producer for Adam & Eve Pictures. “His knowledge of the BDSM world makes him the perfect director for Adam & Eve’s first authentic BDSM movie.”
When Pierce isn't on the set, he is often practicing MMA. The Tae Kwon Do black belt has 12 years of MMA experience that includes both competition and training professional fighters.
In his first three weeks of business, Pierce quickly signed up 26 new members to train at the 1,400 square foot facility, a tribute to his reputation in the MMA world.
"I missed working with the students," Pierce said. "This is the third school I’ve built from the ground up."
Pierce said he is implementing his own program at the school called Kardio Kombat, a system he developed that combines various aspects of MMA in a non-contact format.
"It's station-oriented training," Pierce explained, noting there are stations for striking, grappling, anaerobic and aerobic training in his regimen.
He also said that his school is excellent for women who want to learn some basics about how to defend themselves.
"My goal is to open three schools in the next three to four years," he said.

Feminists lack response to DTH’s BDSM column
TO THE EDITOR:
After reading Thursday’s DTH, I have to admit that I was surprised at the lack of student reaction to Wednesday’s column by Perry Tsai (“I may be kinky, but I’m not crazy”). While college is an easy environment for the normalization of many behaviors, I feel I must draw the line at Tsai’s attempt to condone S&M.
Quite obviously, S&M is the epitome of symbolic violence against women. Frequently, we are reminded of the importance of gender-neutral language, and how this language contributes to a larger “rape culture.” Advocates argue that language holds symbolic power, that saying that we “raped” the other team is not trite, but a reinforcement of masculine dominance. What, then, about a public article condoning the sexual practices of bondage and violence?
I would like to ask why these feminist members have not spoken out in regards to Tsai’s attempt to normalize S&M. Why have you not written in about the normalization of faux rape and the harm of women? Is it because S&M is a private behavior? I thought, feminists, that the “Personal is Political.”
I hope this sparks, at the very least, a discussion about an important topic that could very well have slipped by the wayside. At most, I hope it reveals the intense, almost laughable irony of a group that fumes over noun conflation but implicitly condones sexual violence.

In regard to Colin Campbell’s letter (“Feminists lack response to DTH’s BDSM column”) in Friday’s DTH, I must say that Mr. Campbell is confused.
There is a world of difference between a female submissive being flogged by a male dominant and a woman on the street being assaulted by a knife-wielding ne’er-do-well. That difference is consent. Sex positive feminism isn’t concerned with what consenting adults do in private. If one cannot discern the difference between consensual and non-consensual activities, I don’t believe that the discussion that Mr. Campbell is looking for will be able to go very far at all.
